Book review: The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom by Stephen M. Stigler

Jul 16 2016

A question for Theresa May

  • By SomeBeans in Politics

Why have you appointed a man as foreign secretary who has:

  • Been sacked twice for lying (by Michael Howard and editor of the Times, Charles Wilson);
  • Rode around in a bus with a massive lie on it;
  • Won a prize for an obscene poem about the Turkish President;
  • Insulted the President of the United States;
  • Written a range of racist comments (see item 2 here, others covered elsewhere);
  • Published, as an editor, racist material;
  • Had to visit the city of Liverpool in person to apologise for offending them;
  • Discussed arranging an attack on a journalist with Darius Guppy;

For ordinary working people a track record like this would send their CV to the bottom of the pile. Apparently things are different for a senior member of the Tory Party.

About

I've worked as a scientist for the last 30 years, at various universities, a large home and personal care company, a startup in Liverpool called The Sensible Code Company (formerly ScraperWiki Ltd), GBG and now as a consultant in data science.

I write about:
* the books I have read, typically science and history (or both), partly as a reminder to myself and partly as a review;
* science, things I have done or things I find interesting;
* technology, programming and gadgets;
politics, and current affairs;
* ...and other stuff as it takes my fancy - holidays, photographs and things I want to remember.
